Choose the Type of Ethics Review You Need

Select the relevant committee below to access specific guidelines, forms, training requirements, and contact details:

  • For research involving:

    • Human participants or communities;
    • Human biological materials (blood, tissue, DNA, etc.);
    • Secondary human data (records, databases, etc.); and
    • Interventions, testing, or observation involving humans.

    Researchers, staff, and students who intend to publish research findings derived from human-based research or human-related data, must obtain ethical approval for publication.

    The HREC is registered with the National Health Research Ethics Council (REC-220508-008) and internationally recognized by the U.S. Office for Human Research Protections (IRB 00005968; FWA 00011501).

  • For research involving:

    • Live vertebrate or higher invertebrate animals;
    • Animal-derived materials, data, or products; and
    • Testing, teaching, or experimentation using animals.

    The AREC is registered with the National Health Research Ethics Council under Section 73 of the National Health Act (2003) and operates in compliance with SANS 10386:2021.
