For research involving:
- Human participants or communities;
- Human biological materials (blood, tissue, DNA, etc.);
- Secondary human data (records, databases, etc.); and
- Interventions, testing, or observation involving humans.
Researchers, staff, and students who intend to publish research findings derived from human-based research or human-related data, must obtain ethical approval for publication.
The HREC is registered with the National Health Research Ethics Council (REC-220508-008) and internationally recognized by the U.S. Office for Human Research Protections (IRB 00005968; FWA 00011501).

- Live vertebrate or higher invertebrate animals;
- Animal-derived materials, data, or products; and
- Testing, teaching, or experimentation using animals.
The AREC is registered with the National Health Research Ethics Council under Section 73 of the National Health Act (2003) and operates in compliance with SANS 10386:2021.
