Welcome to the Research Ethics Committees (RECs)

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is committed to promoting ethical, responsible, and high-quality research that protects human participants, respects animal welfare, and upholds the integrity of science.

All research conducted under the auspices of TUT, whether involving humans, animals, or their data and biological materials, must receive prior ethical clearance from the relevant Research Ethics Committee.

TUT has two formally constituted and nationally registered committees:

  • Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) – for research involving human participants, their data, or biological materials.
  • Animal Research Ethics Committee (AREC) – for research involving animals, their biological products, or animal-derived data.

Both committees operate in accordance with the National Health Act (Act No. 61 of 2003), the National Department of Health’s 2024 - Ethics in Health Research: Principles, Processes and Structures, and international ethical standards such as the Declaration of Helsinki, CIOMS Guidelines, and the South African National Standard (SANS 10386:2021).
