TUT’s Prof Alvaro Viljoen Named National Champion of Research Transformation

Prof Alvaro Viljoen, a distinguished B-rated researcher at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), has been honored by the National Research Foundation (NRF) as the Champion of Research Capacity Development and Transformation at a South African Higher Education Institution.

Prof Viljoen, who serves within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and holds the DSTI-NRF Research Chair in Phytomedicine, received the prestigious accolade for his exceptional contributions to cultivating scientific talent, fostering academic inclusivity, and transforming South Africa's research landscape.

Over his illustrious career, he has mentored more than 120 postgraduate students and hosted 26 postdoctoral fellows, heavily prioritizing the advancement of women and researchers from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Reflecting on his dedication to mentoring the next generation, Prof. Viljoen noted, “In academic collaboration, synergy emerges, empowering researchers to achieve more collectively than individually.”

As a global authority in botanical sciences, Prof Viljoen also directs the SAMRC Herbal Drugs Research Unit and has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers. His groundbreaking work, which includes compiling the first South African Herbal Pharmacopoeia, continues to position TUT at the forefront of global scientific innovation. This milestone achievement not only cements Prof Viljoen’s legacy as a visionary leader but also elevates TUT's standing as a premier destination for progressive, high-impact research.
