Dr Etienne van Wyk, Soshanguve Campus Rector and the ICT Executive Dean, led the ceremony and delivered an inspiring welcome address to the new cohort. He also congratulated the students on choosing a field that is both innovative and essential to the future of society and the economy.
“You are not just studying for a qualification, you are preparing to become problem-solvers, innovators and leaders in a digital world,” he said.
Dr van Wyk highlighted that the Tshwane University of Technology is the only institution in the country that has a dedicated ICT Faculty, allowing students to specialise in various ICT disciplines. With a total of 7 500 students enrolled at the Faculty, the new intake forms an important part of a growing and dynamic academic community.

He reminded students that success in ICT requires discipline, persistence and continuous learning. While acknowledging that their journey may come with challenges, deadlines and moments of self-doubt, he encouraged them to remain committed and resilient.
He encouraged students to make the most of opportunities beyond the classroom as well. In line with the University’s new strategic vision focusing on entrepreneurship, they were advised to participate in initiatives such as the Hacker Society, hackathons and project development programmes to strengthen their skills and enhance their employability.
The Dean added that ICT students are selected for their potential, emphasizing the Faculty's commitment to nurturing their comprehensive development throughout their academic journey.

Lecturers from the First Year and Foundation Unit (FYFU) welcomed the new students, while the programme also featured addresses from various student leaders, including Chairperson, Austin Mongwe and SRC President, Nyiko Baloyi, who encouraged students to stay focused, work hard and embrace campus life responsibly.
The highlight of the event was all new students taking the official TUT Student Conduct Pledge. This symbolic moment affirms their commitment to uphold the values, integrity and institutional expectations.
Concluding the Academic Opening, a beautiful saxophone performance by first-year student, Khumo Modise, also added a touch of musical elegance to the celebration.
