Academics

26 May 2026

The Tshwane University of Technology’s Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Innovation (CSTI) will host a Student-Led Tourism Innovation Summit 2026 in partnership with the Department of Tourism. The initiative will bring students, industry and government together to transform tourism research into practical solutions and innovations that directly address sector challenges.

Scheduled for October 2026, students, academics, government, and tourism industry leaders will gather at the Summit to transform tourism research into practical, sector-ready solutions. Students from universities across South Africa will work in multidisciplinary teams, supported by mentors and industry partners, to develop innovative solutions addressing key tourism challenges.

The initiative aligns with national priorities on youth development, innovation, digital transformation and sustainable tourism growth.

Key focus areas include AI-driven tourism tools, community-based tourism, sustainable events, visa efficiency and digital tourism transformation. The programme will encourage applied learning by linking academic research directly to industry needs.

TUT is strengthening its role in applied innovation through its investment in machine learning and artificial intelligence, positioning the institution as a strategic partner in shaping the future of tourism innovation in South Africa.

The Summit places strong emphasis on implementation, with tourism businesses, industry associations and public entities expected to adopt at least one student-developed solution. This approach creates a direct pathway from research to industry impact.

The Student-Led Tourism Innovation Summit 2026 aims to become a national platform where student creativity, research excellence and sector collaboration converge to shape sustainable tourism solutions.

Dr Portia Sifolo, Director of CSTI, said students and lecturers are encouraged to participate in the initiative and showcase solutions for the tourism industry. The Summit’s central message is that research is not complete until students make it real. Call-for-participation
