The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has achieved a major research milestone with the award of its 19th Research Clair - a prestigious Tier 1 South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Chair in Renewable Energy under the DSTI/NRF Decadal Plan Aligned Research Chairs programme.

Led by Prof Abimbola Patricia Popoola, the Chair is supported by a R25 million investment over five years. As a Tier 1 Chair, the funding is renewable every five years for up to 15 years, subject to performance reviews

Prof Popoola expressed her delight at the appointment: “I am deeply honoured and grateful for this opportunity. The establishment of this SARChI Research Chair in Renewable Energy at TUT represents a major milestone for our institution. It will enable us to conduct high-impact research, develop innovative technologies, and train the next generation of researchers and engineers needed to address South Africa’s energy challenges. We are committed to delivering solutions that contribute to a sustainable and inclusive energy future.”

Dr Vathi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement, described the award as a significant step forward for the university:

“This Tier 1 SARChI Chair is a proud achievement for TUT and affirms our growing stature as a research-intensive university of technology. With this new Chair, TUT now has 19 research Chairs. It aligns perfectly with our strategic priorities and South Africa’s national development goals. We are excited about the opportunities this Chair creates for interdisciplinary collaboration, industry partnerships, and meaningful contributions to the renewable energy sector. TUT remains fully committed to providing the necessary support to ensure the Chair’s success and long-term sustainability.”

This new Research Chair is set to strengthen TUT’s leadership in renewable energy, drive cutting-edge research, expand postgraduate training opportunities, and foster stronger industry partnerships. It further advances the university’s vision of delivering technology-based solutions that address societal and industrial needs.

TUT extends warm congratulations to Prof Popoola and the entire research team on this outstanding success.
