TUT outreach initiative empowers Soshanguve East learners

The Department of Journalism and Integrated Communication at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) recently hosted an impactful outreach initiative at Soshanguve East Secondary School, aimed at equipping Grade 12 learners with the knowledge and resources needed to pursue higher education successfully.

In collaboration with the Directorate of Student Development and Support (SDS) and the Financial Aid Office, the outreach team provided learners with comprehensive information ahead of the 2027 academic application period. The session focused on helping prospective students understand university admission requirements, application procedures and available financial support opportunities.

Learners were guided through the online application process, faculty-specific admission criteria and funding options, including the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The engagement also provided an opportunity for university representatives to share valuable insights on academic success, career development and personal growth.

Journalism lecturer Ms Refilwe Mofokeng encouraged learners to pursue careers aligned with their passions and to remain committed to achieving their goals. Drawing on her experience in the media industry, she highlighted the dedication and perseverance often required to excel in the profession.

Dr Aubrey Tsebe from SDS shared practical study strategies to assist learners as they prepare for their final matric examinations. He emphasised the importance of effective time management, disciplined study habits and maintaining a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and personal well-being.

The interactive sessions were well received by the learners, many of whom expressed renewed confidence about their educational futures. “I am excited about this visit. Now I know exactly how to apply once I get home, and I look forward to joining the department as a student next year,” said matric learner Koketso Xaba.

The initiative successfully combined information-sharing, mentorship and motivation, leaving learners better informed about their higher education opportunities and inspired to pursue their academic aspirations. Through initiatives such as these, TUT continues to strengthen its commitment to empowering young people and supporting their journey towards academic and professional success.
