In a significant step to boost research productivity and foster national collaboration, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with several leading South African universities to co-host Postdoctoral Research Fellows.
This initiative forms part of TUT’s strategic response to the mounting financial pressures facing South African higher education. By sharing supervision, infrastructure, and funding responsibilities, these partnerships enable TUT to meaningfully expand its research capacity and output despite constrained budgets.
To date, TUT has established co-hosting agreements with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2023, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in 2024, and most recently, Stellenbosch University in 2026.
“By co-hosting Postdoctoral Fellows, we stretch our limited resources further while exposing our researchers to broader networks, specialised expertise, and world-class facilities,” said Dr Vathiswa Papu-Zamxaka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement. “This model not only accelerates research productivity but also builds a more resilient and interconnected national innovation ecosystem.”
Building on this momentum, the latest agreement with Stellenbosch University, finalised recently, will support joint postdoctoral positions in strategic areas such as science, engineering, technology, and innovation. These fields perfectly align with TUT’s applied research strengths and Stellenbosch’s established research excellence.
Furthermore, the partnership is expected to drive high-impact collaborative projects, increase joint publications, and enhance supervision capacity. It combines Stellenbosch’s deep research pedigree with TUT’s strong industry linkages and applied focus, creating powerful synergies for both institutions and the broader South African research landscape.
Similar arrangements with UJ and Wits have already delivered strong results, including higher research outputs and more robust inter-institutional networks.
“Pooling resources through these partnerships allows us to attract and retain top postdoctoral talent that might otherwise be lost to funding constraints,” said Prof Sibusiso Moyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation and Postgraduate Studies at Stellenbosch University. “It is a win-win that advances knowledge creation while promoting greater collaboration across the higher education sector.”
TUT continues to actively pursue strategic alliances as part of its long-term vision to elevate research excellence and amplify its societal impact.
