TUT’s eMalahleni Campus recently hosted its Campus Opening and Welcome Programme, bringing together first-year students for a day focused on orientation, motivation and student support.
Dr Hajira Mashego, Director of Sports and Recreation.
During the programme, University officials highlighted the unique nature of the transition into higher education, noting that university life differs significantly from students’ previous experiences. They explained that the new phase would bring intellectual challenges, emotional adjustments, and increased responsibility and independence. However, they also emphasised that the journey presents opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and the formation of lifelong friendships.
Minckey Molemane, Senior Administrator at Student Services, congratulated first-year students on reaching this important milestone.
“Congratulations to every first-year student on enrolling at TUT, where we empower people. You have worked really hard to be here. This achievement reflects your commitment, resilience and determination,” she said.

Students were also addressed by other departments, including Student Governance and Leadership Development, Sports and Recreation, the Directorate of Extracurricular Development, Residence and Accommodation, Financial Aid, and Campus Protection Services, to introduce them to key support structures available throughout their academic journey.
Dr Hajira Mashego, Director of Sport and Recreation, encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities beyond the classroom and to prioritise wellness and active participation in campus life.
“You are not here by chance; you are here because you have chosen growth over comfort, possibility over limitation and purpose over uncertainty,” she said.
The event also featured a guest appearance by amapiano star, Master Piece YVK, who shared his personal journey to motivate and encourage students to remain committed to their goals, despite possible challenges.
Dr Thulani Skosana, Academic Manager from the Faculty of Management Sciences, told students about his own journey at the University - how he arrived at the campus, a young student with ambitions and how he managed to remain focused on achieving his dreams.
