The Department of Law, Safety and Security Management at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) celebrated outstanding student achievement at its 2026 Academic Excellence Awards, held recently at the Student Centre, Soshanguve South Campus.
The annual event recognised high-performing students for their dedication and academic success while inspiring the wider student community to remain focused as they prepare for their final examinations. Beyond celebrating achievement, the awards highlighted the value of perseverance, commitment and self-belief in pursuing academic and personal goals. Students were encouraged to view the achievements of their peers as evidence that consistent effort can yield positive results.
Dr Tshilidzi Khangala, Acting Head of the Department of Law, Safety and Security Management, said the awards have become an annual tradition aimed at recognising academic excellence and motivating students ahead of their examinations. “This is a tradition, as it happens around October every year, to motivate the students for their upcoming final examinations,” he said. Khangala added that recognising high-performing students reinforces the message that hard work pays off and can inspire others to remain committed to their studies.
Dr Katlego Mashego, lecturer in the department and organiser of the event, encouraged students to recognise their potential and develop confidence in their abilities. “There is no one who can measure your capabilities; if you are not aware of it, look at where you come from,” he said. Mashego urged students to cultivate a positive mindset and draw motivation from within. He emphasised the importance of self-belief and taking responsibility for developing one’s abilities.
For Mkhuli Nolakana, who placed second in the overall winner category, the recognition was particularly meaningful because it reflected the effort he had invested in his studies. He expressed gratitude for the award and encouraged fellow students to remain focused and committed to achieving their academic goals.
The 2026 Academic Excellence Awards ultimately carried a message extending beyond individual achievement: success is built through consistent effort, self-belief and determination. As students approach their final examinations, the recognition serves as both a celebration of those who have excelled and an encouragement to others to keep working towards their goals. Through initiatives such as the Academic Excellence Awards, the department continues to foster a culture in which academic commitment is recognised and students are encouraged to realise their potential.
