Swiss delegation explores TUT’s innovation corridor driving research commercialisation

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) recently hosted a high-level delegation from the Swiss Embassy in South Africa for an in-depth tour of its vibrant innovation ecosystem, highlighting the University’s commitment to transforming cutting-edge research into commercially viable solutions.
Arranged by TUT’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Office, Jacquelene Friedenthal, Science and Technology Counsellor at the Swiss Embassy and Kgomotso Austin, Science and Technology Programme Officer for the State Secretariat of Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), were taken on a guided visit through several of TUT’s Centres and Institutes.
The engagement focused on opportunities to accelerate the commercialisation of pioneering research and strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.
The tour began at the Directorate for Research and Innovation, with delegates receiving a comprehensive overview of TUT’s specialised Centres, Institutes, Technology Stations, Hubs and Incubators - collectively known as Centres and Institutes.
These entities are the backbone of the University’s innovation corridor, designed to bridge the gap between academic discovery and real-world application.
Spotlight on Centres and Institutes
The delegation visited several flagship facilities, starting with the Institute for Nanoengineering Research (INER). Discussions focused on the institute’s advanced work in alloys and nanomaterials, which holds significant potential for various industrial applications.
At the Technology Station in Chemicals (TSC) and the Institute of Advanced Tooling (IAT), the Swiss guests gained insights of TUT’s successful industry-integrated model. The TSC and IAT emphasise practical technical training programmes that directly respond to sector needs, while supporting applied research and development.
A highlight of the visit was the Rail Manufacturing Centre of Entrepreneurship & Rapid Incubator (RMCERI), a fully operational incubator hosted by TUT. The delegates engaged directly with talented incubatees and Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) who are developing innovative solutions in logistics, recycling, and advanced ICT applications.
The tour concluded at the Technology Station in Electronics (TSE), where live demonstrations showcased locally developed electronic prototypes, underscoring TUT’s capabilities in hardware innovation and engineering excellence.

TUT’s Centres and Institutes innovation corridor plays an important role in catalysing entrepreneurship and stimulating sustainable economic growth. By supporting the translation of research into market-ready products, the ecosystem contributes to job creation and the development of globally competitive South African businesses.
