Student coders transform ideas into solutions during programming fest

Coding talent, creativity and teamwork took centre stage at TUT's eMalahleni Campus when students showcased innovative software solutions during the Fourth Annual Programming Fest. The event challenged participants to solve real-world problems, sharpen their programming skills and compete for top honours across three academic levels.

Department of Computer Science Academic Manager, Senyeki Marebane. Senyeki Marebane, Academic Manager of the hosting Department of Computer Science at the eMalahleni Campus, delivered a motivational address titled "Focus on the Dream" at the opening of the Fest.

First-, second- and third-year students got together for a day of coding, innovation, collaboration and healthy competition.

Marebane encouraged students to focus on their academic journey, reminding them that every achievement starts with a dream and that success requires focus, resilience, discipline and consistent hard work. He urged students to stay focused on their goals, overcome distractions and continue believing in their potential.

The Programming Fest challenged student teams to apply their programming knowledge to practical problems by developing innovative software solutions. Working in groups, participants demonstrated technical expertise, critical thinking, creativity and teamwork while competing against their peers. The event also helped students strengthen their software development skills and prepare for opportunities in the fast-changing ICT sector.

Surprise Mashao, Data Analyst at Huawei, delivered the keynote address and encouraged students to embrace innovation, seize opportunities in technology and use their skills to solve real-world challenges.

The teams presented their projects to a panel of judges who assessed entries on innovation, functionality, technical implementation, teamwork and presentation.

• 3rd Place: Izinja Zothando

Virginia Mokele, Programming Fest Organiser, congratulated all participants for their commitment, resilience and innovative thinking. She also commended the winning teams in each category and thanked every participant for contributing to the event's success.

Over the past four years, the Programming Fest has become one of TUT’s flagship events that encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving while helping to identify emerging talent and strengthen a culture of innovation and excellence in Information and Communication Technology.
