Students and staff gathered at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Ga-Rankuwa Campus Sports Field on 24 July 2026 for the Mandela Day Colour Walk & Run, an initiative that combined physical activity and community service in honour of Nelson Mandela's legacy.
Student Affairs and Extra-Curricular Development (SAED) hosted the event to encourage the University community to embrace the spirit of giving while promoting health, wellness and social responsibility. Participants arrived dressed in white before taking part in the colourful walk and run, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the morning.
Instead of paying an entry fee, participants donated non-perishable food items and toiletries for a school in need as part of the University's Mandela Day outreach initiative. The donations reinforced the message that small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in communities.
The event highlighted the importance of volunteerism and collective action, values closely associated with Mandela Day. By contributing to a worthy cause, students and staff demonstrated a shared commitment to improving the lives of others.
Music, colour powder and an energetic atmosphere added to the celebrations as participants exercised, socialised and supported the charitable initiative. The event reflected TUT's commitment to community engagement and active citizenship while providing an enjoyable opportunity for students and staff to connect.
As the event concluded, the colourful scenes across the sports field served as a reminder of Mandela's enduring legacy of service and compassion. The donations collected and enthusiastic participation of the University community helped make the Colour Walk & Run a fitting celebration of unity, generosity and positive social change.
