Relaunched Cannabis and Hemp platform connects research with real-world impact

From cannabis-based medicines to sustainable farming solutions, a relaunched research platform is creating new opportunities across one of South Africa’s fastest-growing industries. The Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Cannabis and Hemp Research and Innovation Platform combines scientific expertise, advanced technology and industry collaboration to support innovation, product development, skills growth and entrepreneurship across the cannabis and hemp value chain.

Katerere Prof David Katerere, a key figure in TUT’s cannabis and hemp research and innovation initiatives. Prof David Katerere, Professor of Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmaceutical and Biotech Advancement in Africa (PBAA) Research Group Leader and Co-Director of the TUT/CSIR Cannabis and Hemp Research Hub, is leading efforts to strengthen research, innovation and specialised services in the cannabis and hemp sector.

The recently relaunched Cannabis and Hemp Research and Innovation Platform supports farmers, entrepreneurs and industry professionals with research and development, training and contract extraction services. Its offerings include cultivation support, pest management, sustainable farming practices, extraction and product formulation.

Prof Katerere’s work spans pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, formulation and agro-processing. Together with a team of South African and international students and researchers, he is helping unlock the scientific and economic potential of cannabis and hemp. TUT and the CSIR have secured hemp permits for both research and commercialisation, creating new opportunities for collaboration, product development and further research.

The platform is part of the wider TUT/CSIR Cannabis and Hemp Research Hub, which combines expertise from pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, crop sciences, engineering and agro-processing. Researchers are exploring applications ranging from cannabis-based medicines and nutraceuticals to sustainable agricultural practices, biochar, and other value-added products.

This work is supported by advanced infrastructure, including a supercritical carbon dioxide extraction system that TUT describes as unique in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Using a “farm2pharmacy” approach, the Hub focuses on developing products that can assist in managing conditions such as arthritis, eczema, alopecia and hyperpigmentation using cannabis-based formulations.

Recognising that research alone is not enough to build a sustainable industry, Maria Lloyd from SA Management 24, contributes expertise in marketing and positioning, helping innovators convert research and natural-product concepts into market opportunities. Her role strengthens links between scientific innovation, entrepreneurship and the commercialisation of research.

In 2026, Lloyd joined Prof Katerere during an African Research Network session that explored how natural product innovation can successfully move from research to market. The engagement highlighted the importance of effective communication, business positioning and commercial strategy in transforming research into viable opportunities.

The platform aims to ensure that research creates tangible benefits beyond the laboratory. By connecting research with practical application, skills development and enterprise, it supports farmers, entrepreneurs, businesses and industry while contributing to a sustainable cannabis and hemp sector in South Africa and across the continent.
