Practical research skills build stronger postgraduate foundations

Building confidence in research and preparing postgraduate students for academic success were at the heart of a two-day Systematic Literature Review (SLR) workshop hosted at Tshwane University of Technology's Soshanguve South Campus. The initiative equipped Computer Science students and staff with practical research skills, mentorship and valuable insights aimed at strengthening research capacity and supporting a smooth progression from postgraduate diploma to Masters studies.

The workshop equipped postgraduate students with practical knowledge and skills to c Dr Bertie Buitenda,  Department of Computer Science Senior Lecturer. onduct systematic literature reviews and navigate the research process. It also supported the department's efforts to strengthen the research capabilities of Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) students and prepare them for Masters level studies.

Dr Bertie Buitendag, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, said the initiative aimed to help PGDip students build a stronger research foundation and develop the skills needed to progress confidently to Masters studies.

Senyeki Marebane, Academic Manager in the Department of Computer Science at eMalahleni Campus, facilitated the workshop and shared his research experience while guiding participants through the systematic literature review process.

Marebane highlighted the value of research in developing confidence among emerging scholars and enabling meaningful engagement within the academic community.

“Research gives you the confidence to engage with other scholars and demonstrate your contribution to the research landscape,” he said.

He was joined by students he currently mentors, who shared their research experiences with participants. Potego Kgaphola reflected on his own research journey, discussing both the lessons learned and achievements attained along the way.

His testimony offered students a practical perspective on postgraduate research and illustrated how persistence and dedication can lead to rewarding outcomes.

Siyabonga Mthombeni, Administrative Assistant in the Department of Computer Science, said the workshop provided valuable insights that he hopes to apply in his own research journey. He appreciated the depth of analysis presented during the sessions and expressed his commitment to strengthening his research and academic writing skills with the goal of publishing high-quality research.

The initiative forms part of the department's broader efforts to strengthen research capacity and cultivate a culture of scholarly engagement among postgraduate students and staff. By combining practical research training with mentorship and shared academic experiences, the department continues to support emerging researchers as they advance their postgraduate studies.
