Phetolo Phalafala, Academic Excellence Officer at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Polokwane Campus, encouraged first-year students to commit to their studies during the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology orientation.
The orientation took place at the Tech 9 Hall on the Polokwane Campus towards the end of February, where first-year students gathered to begin their academic journey. Representatives from several directorates, academic departments and partners from the financial sector shared guidance and encouragement with the new cohort.
Phalafala urged students to attend lectures consistently and participate actively in academic activities. He emphasised dedication and hard work, noting that the Academic Excellence Office recognises students who achieve outstanding academic performance each year.
“During the Campus Awards Ceremony, the Faculty recognises top achievers at each academic level, including first year, second year, third year, fourth year, Foundation and Advanced Diploma students,” he said.
Mmaphuti Kgomo, who was named the overall top achiever in Computer Science across all levels at the Polokwane Campus in 2025, shared advice with the new students. She encouraged them to “Build strong relationships with lecturers and make use of opportunities such as Studythons and Hackathons. Use your spare time productively by developing additional skills that will strengthen your academic performance and future careers,” she said.

Winston Milanzi from First National Bank addressed students on financial literacy. “Managing your finances responsibly is crucial to alleviating stress levels and can contribute positively to your academic success,” he said.
He also shared tips on how students can make their money work for them.
Speaking on behalf of the Girls in Tech initiative, Refilwe Mthethwa encouraged female students to join this platform that supports women in the ICT Faculty and promotes participation in the technology sector.
Students engaged with speakers throughout the programme and asked questions during the interactive sessions. The event ended on a lively note as students joined in a war cry and embraced their new academic community.
