Students from the Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FoICT) claimed top honours at the 2026 MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience held at Rosebank Mall in April, securing first and second place in the Street Fighter esports category. Their success highlighted the growing connection between ICT education and competitive gaming, where strategy, analytical thinking and fast decision-making are essential.

Tiyani Tiyani Nkuna (Informatics) and Hlulani Ndlovu (Computer Science). Hlulani Ndlovu emerged as the overall winner after delivering an impressive performance marked by precision, composure under pressure and strategic thinking. His victory reflected his exceptional gaming ability, as well as the analytical mindset and problem-solving skills developed through ICT studies.

Tiyani Nkuna secured a second place after a series of highly competitive matches. Nkuna demonstrated consistency and adaptability throughout the tournament, while showcasing outstanding systems thinking and quick decision-making in a high-pressure environment.

The in-centre event featured 12 heats of the EA FC 26 tournament over the weekend, with the top two from each heat advancing to the Mall Final. Four additional participants qualified online, bringing the total number of finalists to 28.

The high-traffic launch event formed part of the nationwide MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience tour, which runs from April to August across major shopping centres in South Africa. Featuring gaming titles such as EA FC 26, Fortnite and Street Fighter across Xbox, Nintendo and PC platforms, the tournament attracts millions of gamers from diverse backgrounds and provides a platform for emerging and experienced esports competitors.

Ndlovu and Nkuna’s achievements reinforced TUT’s growing presence in esports and highlighted the depth of talent within the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology. Their success also demonstrated how ICT skills are applied in rapidly growing digital and gaming industries.
