The Faculty of Science at the Tshwane University of Technology hosted its Postgraduate Student Orientation on Friday, 17 April 2026. New and returning postgraduate students gathered during the full-day programme for an engaging and informative introduction to the academic, research and support environment within the Faculty.

Postgraduate students are central to the Faculty’s research and innovation agenda, contributing significantly across its three core streams: Natural Sciences, Health Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. The orientation programme was designed to equip students with the knowledge, tools and institutional support necessary to navigate their postgraduate journeys successfully.

The structured programme covered key aspects of postgraduate study, including registration processes, policy frameworks, funding opportunities and scholarship requirements. Students were also introduced to critical academic areas, including research ethics and integrity, the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research and best practices in academic publishing.

The session also addressed practical and developmental topics, including managing the student–supervisor relationship, strategies for academic success, research writing and publishing processes and maintaining personal wellbeing during postgraduate studies. The inclusion of a curated research skills development programme further underscored the Faculty’s commitment to building high-level research capacity.

Speaking on the significance of the orientation, Executive Dean, Professor Ntebogeng Mokgalaka – Fleischmann, said:
“Postgraduate students are at the heart of our Faculty’s research mission. This orientation reflects our strategic commitment to developing capable, ethical and innovative researchers who contribute meaningfully to society. It aligns directly with our Faculty’s strategy and the Institutional Strategic Plan by strengthening research capacity, advancing innovation and supporting student success across all scientific disciplines. In doing so, we actively advance the University’s vision of ‘Entrepreneuring the Future’ by nurturing a new generation of scientists who are knowledge creators, as well as innovators and problem-solvers, equipped to translate research into real-world impact. ”

The orientation programme is part of the Faculty’s broader vision to foster a dynamic and supportive research ecosystem, empowering postgraduate students to excel academically and contribute to impactful scientific advancement.
