The 28-year-old Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) alumni’s dedication has turned what he described as challenging years into a story of academic excellence.
Due to a of lack of information and career guidance, Xolo who matriculated in 2017, took three gap years before enrolling at TUT. The Auditing Post Graduate Diploma graduate from KwaZulu-Natal said his spirit of resilience sustained him, while highlighting the challenges he faced, which made him think of giving up.
“Getting an opportunity to pursue my studies in 2021 felt like catching the last train at the very last minute. I was very close to letting go of the dream of continuing my education due to frustration over the delays in securing that opportunity. Having waited for this opportunity for three years, motivated me to put in at least five times more effort than most,” he said.
A former high school classmate encouraged Xolo to study Auditing at TUT, which opened the door to an opportunity to transform his life through education.
“A story I have only shared with a few people is about my former high school classmate, and her sister. They played an important role in my journey by helping me enrol for my Diploma in Internal Auditing at a time when I lacked information and had no one to guide me,” he said.
Against this background, Xolo’s was determined to become the cream of the crop. The Faculty of Economics and Finance’ 2024 Chancellor’s Award recipient emphasized the role that his academics played in instilling strong principles and work ethics, highlighting how they contributed to securing him a permanent position within the first six months of starting his internship.
“I believe what set me apart was my mindset and work ethic. Because of my background, I have always understood that I cannot afford to become too comfortable. I have to consistently push myself and give my best in everything I do. Therefore, I approach every task with discipline, attention to detail and a willingness to learn. During my Work Integrated Learning, I was proactive, took initiative and made sure I delivered quality work within deadlines. I also remained open to feedback and used it to continuously improve, which I believe enabled me to grow quickly within a short period,” he concluded.
