Prominent Eyewitness News reporter and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) alumnus Alpha Ramushwana has been named Alumnus of the Year at the Faculty of Humanities’ 2025 Academic Excellence Awards, recognising his contribution to journalism and commitment to integrity and public accountability.
Prof Mashupye Maserumule, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, presents the Alumnus of the Year Award to Eyewitness News reporter Alpha Ramushwana.
The award was presented by Prof Mashupye Maserumule, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, in recognition of Ramushwana’s contribution to journalism and South Africa’s evolving democracy. The accolade underscores the important role journalists play in informing the public, holding those in power accountable and contributing to a strong democratic society. It also highlights the impact TUT graduates continue to make across South Africa’s media landscape.
Reflecting on the recognition, Ramushwana expressed his delight at being honoured by the institution that played a significant role in shaping his professional journey. “It feels amazing to be honoured by such a massive institution. I will always keep TUT inside of me. A significant portion of my development and my success will always be attributed to the training and learning I received from TUT,” he said.
Ramushwana also reflected on the lasting influence the University has had on its graduates. “People sometimes undermine the impact that TUT has had on many of us, but if you go from person to person, you’ll realise that it’s more than a university but a home,” he added.

The latest accolade adds to Ramushwana’s growing list of professional achievements. In June 2026, he received top honours at the 2025 National Press Club Awards, winning in the Radio News and Radio Features/Investigative Journalism categories. He was also named Radio News Reporter of the Year, further cementing his standing in South African broadcast journalism.
His achievements demonstrate the value of professional training, dedication and responsible journalism, while serving as an inspiration to aspiring journalists and fellow TUT alumni.
