5th Limpopo Varsity Hackathon challenges participants to hack for agriculture

The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the TUT Polokwane Campus officially launched the 5th Annual Limpopo Varsity Hackathon on Friday, 15 May 2026, marking the beginning of another exciting chapter of innovation, collaboration and technological excellence.

5thTVH-2 In her opening address, Prof Ilze Swarts form TUT’s Department of Management and Entrepreneurship, welcomed guest and set an inspiring tone for the day. Her address highlighted the importance of creating platforms that encourage creativity, problem-solving and student innovation.

Providing insight into the significance of the event, Frans Kgoete, Lecturer from the Department of Computer Science, unpacked the purpose of the hackathon and its role in nurturing technological skills among students.

Dr Khuliso Sigama, the 2026 Chief Executive organiser, introduced the 2026 hackathon theme, “Hacking for Agriculture,” challenging participants to explore innovative technological solutions aimed at addressing agricultural challenges and advancing the sector through digital transformation.

5thTVH-5 The launch brought together representatives from academia and industry, reinforcing the power of collaboration in shaping the future of technology and entrepreneurship. Partner institutions and industry stakeholders highlighted their collective commitment to empowering the next generation of tech innovators.

Distinguished academic representatives included Dr Michael Moeti, Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of ICT, TUT; Ndabezinhle Soganile, Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at UNIVEN; Dr Vekani Baloyi, Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Computer Science at UL; and Mapula Lesailane, Limpopo Provincial Lead at mLab. Their contributions underscored the importance of partnerships between higher education institutions in advancing digital learning and innovation.

5thTVH-1 Industry leaders also shared valuable perspectives on digital transformation, innovation and skills development. Speakers included Sivuyile Ngogodo, Manager for Fixed Line Technology Services at MTN; Wenston Milanzi, Key Account Manager at FNB; Evens Mkhwanzi, Area Manager at FNB; Maureen Chokoe, Market Manager at Nedbank; Palesa Ledwaba, Team Leader for Sales and Service at Nedbank; Adivhaho Mamanyuha from Motse Innovation Centre; and Keoagile Thakadu, Managing Director of Nelekat Skills Development and Training.

Their presentations highlighted the growing importance of partnerships between academia and industry in preparing students for the future world of work. Emphasis was placed on digital skills, innovation, entrepreneurship and the opportunities that arise when institutions and businesses collaborate to support student development.

5thTVH-4 The event served not only as an official launch but also as a celebration of technology, entrepreneurship and networking. Students, innovators, stakeholders and guests engaged in meaningful discussions and exchanges that reflected the spirit of the hackathon and its growing impact within the province.

Adding excitement and entertainment to the programme was an energetic performance by Mafuleka Khethelo, a third-year student from the Department of Computer Science. The performance displayed the diverse talent within the Faculty of ICT and brought vibrant energy to the occasion.

5thTVH-3 The launch of the 5th Annual Limpopo Varsity Hackathon demonstrates the continued commitment of TUT and its partners to fostering innovation and empowering future technology leaders. As preparations begin for the hackathon itself, the event has already set the stage for another impactful edition where creativity, collaboration and digital innovation will take centre stage.
