The Faculty of ICT successfully hosts the 5th IMITEC Conference

The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) proudly hosted the 5th International Multidisciplinary Information Technology and Engineering Conference (IMITEC 2025) from 26-28 Nov 2025

Dr Vathi. Dr Vathiswa Papu-Xamxaka DVC:Rsearch, Innovation and Engagement The event took place in a hybrid format, with the first day held online and the remaining two days hosted physically at the Maslow Time Square in Menlyn.

Organised under the leadership of Prof Chunling Du from the Department of Computer Systems Engineering, IMITEC 2025 once again positioned itself as a dynamic research platform that fosters collaboration, innovation, and global knowledge exchange. Co-hosted in partnership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the conference continued to strengthen TUT’s footprint in multidisciplinary IT and engineering research.

The conference brought together leading academics, researchers, students, and industry professionals from an array of disciplines, including Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Business Informatics, Data Science, and ICT in Education.

Dr Etienne van Wyk Dr Etienne van Wyk Executive Dean for the Faculty of ICT Authors were invited to submit unpublished research papers, all of which underwent a rigorous double-blind peer review process. Accepted papers will be published in the IMITEC 2025 proceedings and submitted to the IEEE Xplore Digital Library (subject to meeting IEEE scope and quality requirements), ensuring international visibility and scholarly impact.

IMITEC 2025 attracted participation from 25 local and international institutions, including universities, research bodies, and industry partners. The participating institutions were:

The physical sessions began with an impactful opening address by Dr Vathiswa Papu-Zamxaka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation & Engagement. Her message emphasised innovation, global collaboration, and the importance of multidisciplinary research in addressing contemporary societal challenges.

Executive Dean of the Faculty of ICT, Dr Etienne van Wyk, delivered a compelling Dean’s address, aligning the conference with the faculty’s commitment to excellence and high-impact research.

The highlight of IMITEC 2025 was the participation of TUT’s talented ICT students, who showcased their innovative projects to delegates from various institutions and industries. Their presentations sparked meaningful discussions, valuable feedback, and cross-disciplinary interest.

IMITEC 2025 successfully bridged academia and industry, offering a collaborative space for exchanging ideas, sharing research breakthroughs, and inspiring innovation. With both online and physical participation supported, the conference ensured global accessibility and broad engagement.

As TUT continues to grow its research footprint and international collaborations, IMITEC remains a flagship platform that drives impactful multidisciplinary research in South Africa and beyond.
