South Africa’s biggest digital, gaming and technology event, the rAge Expo

rAge Expo Once again highlighted the future of innovation as thousands of enthusiasts gathered to explore the latest in gaming, virtual reality, robotics, digital art, esports, cosplay and emerging technologies.

Held annually, the Really Awesome Gaming Expo brings together young people, families, developers, entrepreneurs, students and tech fans in an environment that blends entertainment with education. The event offers a window into the fast-growing digital economy and the careers it continues to create.

The 2025 edition demonstrated the expo’s ongoing ability to unite creativity, innovation and collaboration. Representatives from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Advancement and Partnership Office attended the event to explore new trends and connect with organisations for future partnerships. Their engagement underscored the value of networks that support student development, research and hands-on learning.

Mandla Magwaza, Ambassador of the rAge Expo, plays a key role in promoting digital creativity and youth empowerment. His insights offered a clear understanding of how events like rAge help universities strengthen academic offerings and support young innovators.

Magwaza explained that the expo is where academic concepts meet real world practice. “In classrooms students learn theory such as coding, design thinking and entrepreneurship, but at rAge they see these concepts in action through gaming studios, XR developers, esports teams, content creators, tech entrepreneurs and digital artists who demonstrate the future of work in real time.”

He added that exposing students to such environments creates opportunities for practical learning, inspires innovative thinking and helps them visualise possible career paths.

On collaboration, Magwaza stressed the need for strong partnerships between industry and higher education, noting that technology evolves rapidly and students must be connected to environments where innovation happens every day.

“These partnerships help update curriculum, open pathways to internships and employment, offer access to advanced tools and support research in fields such as artificial intelligence, gaming technology and cybersecurity,” he continued.

He also emphasised that rAge is more than entertainment. “Events like this create spaces where young people can see themselves as creators, innovators, founders and global competitors,” he said.

From a student journalism perspective, attending the expo demonstrated the importance of staying informed about industry direction, future skills and opportunities for meaningful collaboration. It reinforced the understanding that innovation requires collective effort among universities, industry and organisations committed to empowering the next generation.

The rAge Expo 2025 proved to be a powerful platform for imagination, collaboration and growth. It strengthened conversations about how education and industry can work together to support young people in a rapidly evolving digital world.
