ICT Faculty opens doors to new first-year cohort

The start of a new academic journey brings excitement and anticipation. For first-year students at the Faculty of ICT at Tshwane University of Technology their university experience began memorably.

Dr Etienne van Wyk, Executive Dean of the Faculty of ICT and Interim Campus Rector of the Soshanguve campuses. Held annually, the essential academic opening day serves as an event designed to welcome newcomers, introduce them to University life and share the resources and information they need to thrive in their academic pursuits.

This year, the academic opening took place on 14 February 2025 at the Soshanguve South Campus and livestreamed on the ICT Faculty's Facebook page (Facultyofict_tut), ensuring that ICT students from the eMalahleni and Polokwane campuses could also join in and participate in the opening session. The hybrid format allowed for a greater sense of inclusion and connectedness among students, making the day even more special.

The day kicked off with a warm and engaging welcome address from Dr Etienne van Wyk, Executive Dean of the Faculty of ICT and Interim Campus Rector of the Soshanguve Campuses. Setting the tone for the day, e emphasised the Faculty’s core mission of producing future-ready graduates. He shared the importance of mastering technical skills, such as programming, as well as understanding the broader ICT landscape and how technology can be harnessed to solve both business and global challenges with the students.

In his address, Dr van Wyk highlighted the Faculty’s commitment to developing students who are well-prepared for the ever-evolving ICT industry. 

He elaborated on the Faculty’s focus on developing "graduate attributes"—a set of professional skills that are essential for success in the modern workforce. These attributes, according to Dr van Wyk, go beyond academic knowledge and include being critical thinkers, team players and responsible citizens. He also stressed the importance of adaptability and flexibility, particularly in a fast-changing field like ICT, while encouraging students to become lifelong learners in order to stay ahead of industry trends and innovations.

Mashitishi Phurutsi, First Year and Foundation Unit Manager (TUT101 First-Year Faculty Orientation Champion). Following Dr van Wyk’s address, several other Faculty members and student support services representatives took the stage to offer valuable insights and encouragement. These speeches focused on providing students with a clearer understanding of what to expect during their studies and the immense opportunities available at the Faculty of ICT.

In conclusion, Mashitishi Phurutsi, First Year and Foundation Unit Manager, offered heartfelt words of encouragement to the new students. He reminded the first-year students of the importance of perseverance and staying focused on their goals. He encouraged them to embrace the challenges ahead, seek support when needed and always strive to reach their full potential.

As they continue their studies at TUT, these students can look forward to gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the dynamic and ever-changing world of ICT, and to move from Good to Great.
