A recent engagement session between the Department of Applied Languages and recipients of the Department of Sport Arts and Culture (DSAC)

Partial bursary has highlighted the bursary’s real impact in opening the door to improved support for students.

The strategically aligned session, held with the 2024–2025 cohort, brought together bursary recipients and members of the adjudication committee to celebrate achievements, share lived experiences and refine the bursary’s application and administration processes. This year’s bursary cycle focused solely on students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Language Practice to strengthen enrolment and advance expertise in the field.

Two students shared their experiences that captured the bursary’s significance. Bonisiwe Nxumalo said the application process was smooth and explained that the funding removed financial barriers that could have halted her studies. The bursary has enabled her to register for her Master’s degree. Visually impaired student, Calvin Mogajane, also shared his appreciation for the support, noting that even partial funding brought him stability and life-changing relief. Other recipients echoed these sentiments and said the bursary eased financial strain, which helped them concentrate on their academic goals.

In response to student feedback, the Department committed to immediate improvements, including:

  • Establishing a dedicated bursary advisory desk
  • Streamlining document verification
  • Enhancing follow-up and support

During the session, the Department once again reinforced its commitment to student wellbeing, inclusivity, equitable access and strong partnerships with industry and funders.

Prof Tebogo Rakgogo, Head of the Department of Applied Languages, thanked students, the adjudication committee and DSAC for their ongoing partnership. He encouraged recipients to seize every opportunity to address South Africa’s socioeconomic challenges and youth unemployment.

The Department of Applied Languages extended its appreciation to DSAC for its continued investment in developing the next generation of language professionals.
