TUT Bursary and Scholarship Fund
About the Fund
The TUT Bursary and Scholarship Fund, established in 2014, provides sustainable financial support to academically deserving students who face financial exclusion. It particularly assists the “missing middle”, students who do not qualify for NSFAS yet cannot afford tuition, accommodation, or basic living costs.
Why It Matters
- South Africa has high youth unemployment and rising student debt.
- Many TUT students are first-generation degree holders from low-income communities.
- Financial barriers lead to high drop-out rates and low postgraduate enrolments, limiting the national skills pipeline.
How the Fund Works
- Sustainable Growth: Contributions are invested to grow the Fund for long-term impact.
- Annual Support: Most funds go directly to student support, while a portion is reinvested.
- Inclusive Contributions: Support comes from staff, alumni, corporate partners, and donors.
- Targeted Impact: Donors may fund faculty-specific or equity-focused bursaries.
Who Benefits
- Undergraduate and postgraduate students needing tuition, accommodation, meals, and transport.
- Women, rural students, and students with disabilities.
- Students pursuing advanced diplomas and postgraduate studies.
Impact
- Increased graduation rates and reduced drop-outs.
- Stronger national skills pipeline in priority fields like science, engineering, education, and the green economy.
- Reduced student debt and improved institutional sustainability.
