Arts and Design

  • The Centre for Creative Industries aims to develop and provide high quality solutions using creative technologies in partnership with the private sector. It seeks to create an institutional centre of excellence that will provide much-needed research, innovation and development expertise for the emerging South African creative industries sectors.

Economics and Finance

  • The Institute for Economic Research on Innovation (IERI) aims to address South Africa’s socioeconomic challenges by driving innovative research for economic development. The institute focuses on promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development through technology-based studies and social enterprise.  The core purpose of IERI is to generate and apply knowledge that promotes economic transformation and reduces inequality in South Africa. 

Engineering and the Built Environment

  • The Centre for Energy and Electrical Power (CEEP) undertakes high quality, targeted and useful research that directly contributes to addressing energy and electric power issues.  The centre specialises in research on energy efficiency, renewable energy and power usage optimisation. It provides university staff with an outlet to carry out research and contract work, challenging them to develop practical solutions for the industry and community while increasing knowledge and expertise within the University work.

  • The Institute for Advance Tooling (IAT) provides technical expertise and services to small and medium enterprises (SME) in the tooling industry. The institute aims to improve the competitiveness of SMEs in the tooling industry through developing highly skilled and educated workers with challenging jobs, capable of delivering quality products and processes that meet the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) requirements. It also seeks to deliver a new paradigm of high added value tools and tool making business models that will reposition tool and die makers as key strategic partners in the value chain in accordance with relevant industry needs.

  • The Technology Station in Chemicals (TSC) offers a wide range of services designed to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the chemical sector. It provides SMEs technical support to assist them in the design and development of products, prototyping, manufacturing, process innovation, and training activities. Experienced staff, consisting of scientists, technologists, technicians and external service providers, participate in the product development of various projects.

  • The Technology Station in Electronics (TSE) assists small and medium enterprises with technical support in the design and development of products, prototyping, manufacturing, process innovation and training activities. It operates in the electronic, electrical, and information and communication technology industries. It is primarily a technology platform offering clients expert advice, product development, and low volume manufacturing services.

  • F’SATI (the French South African Institute of Technology) is a joint graduate school between France and South Africa, based at the Tshwane University of Technology. It offers Master’s and Doctorate degrees, fostering collaboration between South African and French institutions to develop knowledge and technology in fields like electronics and advanced manufacturing. It aims to develop knowledge and technology transfer in South Africa and to enhance the competitiveness of South African manufacturing through advanced technology.

  • The Institute for NanoEngineering Research (INER) accelerates innovation and skills development in nanotechnology and advanced materials processing through collaborative interdisciplinary research and technology transfer between academia and relevant industries.

  • The Rail Manufacturing Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (RMCERI) develops young, technologically innovative, entrepreneurs and establishes profitable small and medium enterprises that would have a tangible impact on wealth creation, localisation, and industry diversification.

Management Science

  • The Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Innovation (CSTI) is dedicated to advancing the sustainability and inclusivity of tourism destinations and industries through interdisciplinary research, comprehensive training programmes, and active capacity building programmes. Its aim to foster resilient tourism practices that balance economic growth, environmental stewardship and social equity while actively engaging local communities and stakeholders to participate in and benefit from tourism development.

  • The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) fosters entrepreneurship and helps start-ups with mentoring, coaching, training and access to networks to accelerate their success and create jobs for economic development.

Science

  • The Centre for Tissue Engineering (CTE) is a multi-disciplinary human tissue bank that sources, processes and supply eye tissue, skin, bone and tendons, and cardiovascular tissue for implant, transplant and therapeutic purposes. The centre also conducts biological engineering of allograft growth factor-type implants designed for clinical applications through improved better efficiencies using research and development. CTE is also committed to respecting and protecting the dignity of donors and the donors’ families.

  • The Centre for Applied Chemistry Research (CACRe) focuses on innovation and skills development in nanotechnology, advanced energy materials, water treatment, environment, and medical (theranostics) applications.

  • The Centre for Environmental Health (CEH) provides expertise to industry and the community in the environmental health and related sectors.

  • The TUT/CSIR Cannabis and Hemp Research Hub is at the forefront of innovation and research in the cannabis and hemp industry. The mission of the hub is to drive sustainable development, promote scientific excellence, and empower businesses and individuals through cutting-edge research, training and consultancy services.

  • The Institute for Future of Work (IFoW) is an ideation hub for public-private collaboration and innovation to respond to the requirements of the rapidly changing world of work brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It collaborates with companies across sectors, including technology, financial services, healthcare and manufacturing to create a community of advocates and partners at the highest level.

  • The TUT Hub AI of the Artificial Intelligence Institute of South Africa serves as a common base for knowledge generation, research and development, as well as implementation capabilities of AI applications for areas such as health, agriculture, finance, mining, manufacturing and government.
