Ethics Training

In alignment with the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) – National Department of Health (NDoH) Guidelines, all researchers applying for ethical approval through the TUT Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) are required to provide evidence of research ethics training completed within the previous three (3) years.

The South African Ethics in Health Research Guidelines: Principles, Processes and Structures, 2024, (V3.1) (NDoH 2024) state:

“Competence is demonstrated mainly by academic qualifications, credentials, scientific and technical competence, as evidenced in previous publications or testimonials. Competence includes research competence, which is assessed in terms of education, knowledge, certification, and experience. In addition, researchers must produce evidence of appropriate research ethics training within the previous three years.”

TUT HREC Requirement:
To ensure compliance with the above requirement and to promote responsible and ethical research practice, the TUT HREC recommends that all supervisors and students complete:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Research Ethics
  • Module 2: Research Ethics Evaluation
  • Module 3: Informed Consent

These modules are available free of charge via the Training and Resources in Research Ethics Evaluation (TRREE) online platform: www.trree.org

Other trainings relevant or equivalent to introduction to research ethics, ethics evaluation and information consent

Submission Requirements:

  • A copy of the completion certificates for Modules 1, 2, and 3 of all staff, students and supervisors must be attached to ALL ethical approval applications submitted to the TUT HREC.
  • Certificates older than three (3) years will not be accepted; refresher training will be required.
