The Department of Architecture and Industrial Design at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) educates future professional architects and senior architectural technologists. Our programmes are accredited by the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), ensuring alignment with national and international professional standards.
Architecture is a creative discipline rooted in both the arts and the sciences. It requires precision, analytical thinking and technical competence, while embracing creativity, imagination and curiosity. At its core, architecture balances geometry and order with mystery and innovation. The study of architecture is inherently interdisciplinary. It explores the social, cultural, technological, environmental and economic forces that shape the built environment. If you are driven by a social mission, value scientific and technological advancement and are intrigued by the revelations offered in works of art, then architecture may be the ideal field of study.
Architecture is one of the most diverse and stimulating professional careers. Students not only learn to navigate the complex relationship between function, aesthetics, technology, sustainability and society, but are also trained in a wide range of communication and representation skills, including academic writing, freehand and technical drawing, model-making, photography, video filming, artificial intelligence, digital design and oral presentations. Architectural education at TUT develops critical thinkers and creative problem-solvers who are able to integrate these dimensions into meaningful architectural responses. The architectural practice itself is a dynamic and collaborative environment. Architectural offices are often creative spaces where projects are developed collaboratively, by everybody in the office, which involves architects, technologists, clients, consultants and contractors.
On completing the Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) degree, graduates may choose to enter professional practice or pursue advanced studies in specialised fields (Technology option) to develop expertise in areas such as, architectural office management, project management, architectural communication and media, digital and IT systems in architecture or sustainable design and green technologies.
Completion of a Master’s degree in Architecture enables graduates to register with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) as a Professional Architect, subject to successful completion of the professional practice examination.
Graduates from TUT Architecture and Industrial Design are creative, technically skilled and socially responsive. They are professionals equipped to shape resilient, sustainable and innovative built environments for the future.
