Faculty of Economics and Finance

The Faculty of Economics and Finance at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is a dynamic academic hub dedicated to producing future-ready economists, accountants, auditors, financiers and public sector professionals. Rooted in innovation and entrepreneurship, the Faculty prepares students to thrive in the evolving global economy while contributing to South Africa’s socio-economic development.  

All programmes offer career-focused progression possibilities from Higher Certificate and Diplomas at entry level; to Advanced Diplomas, Postgraduate Diplomas, as well as Master’s and Doctoral degrees. 

The Higher Certificate provides a solid foundation for entry into a diploma, equipping students with essential academic and workplace skills.  Diplomas provide practical, career-oriented programmes. These programmes blend theoretical knowledge with workplace relevance through the Simulated Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) component and focus on building core numeracy, communication and financial literacy skills for entry-level employment or further study. 

The Advanced Diploma is aimed at diploma graduates or professionals seeking to deepen their expertise and move into management or specialist roles, it focuses on strategic, analytical and managerial competencies to bridge into postgraduate study or leadership roles. 

The Postgraduate Diploma is a strong transition between undergraduate and research-based study, preparing graduates for advanced analysis and policy work and developing applied skills for the financial, business and public sectors.

Master’s Degrees are Research-focused qualifications that advance independent thinking and problem-solving within professional and academic contexts, also focused on deep research inquiry, policy innovation and applied solutions to complex financial and economic issues.

Doctoral Degrees are the pinnacle of academic achievement in the Faculty, focused on generating original research that contributes to knowledge, policy and practice, focusing on independent, cutting-edge research shaping the future of economics, finance and public governance in South Africa and beyond.
