Virtual Symposium Aims to Cultivate and Inspire Dialogue, Reflection, and Action in the Creative Industries
The Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Arts & Design, A Re Bueng Seminars, will present Emergent modalities in producing and experiencing the creative industries in the time of COVID-19, a virtual symposium,on 30 September 2021.
The Faculty of Arts & Design, in collaboration with the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), invite artists, scholars, educators, policymakers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and activists to engage on the emergent trends and modalities of how the creative industries are being produced and subsequently experienced during Covid. The pandemic has necessitated a shift in how the creative industries are fashioned, appreciated, and patronised.
For this virtual symposium, we invite papers that explore the possibilities and/or drawbacks when multi-sensory and/or mono-sensory aesthetic experiences are compressed into the digital screen – be the screen on a computer, tablet, mobile phone, or television. We are specifically interested in presentations that grapple with the conceptual, rhetorical, and artistic possibilities of the creative industries during Covid. Furthermore, submissions are also welcome that consider the real-world, structural, and economic eventualities of the creative industries during Covid.
The theme of this virtual seminar is posed as a provocation about the disposition of the creative industries now and into the future. In South Africa, we have seen various interventions, programmes, and projects facilitated by the state, altruistic donors, arts and design practitioners, and the general public that have sought to ‘save’ and ‘advance’ the creative industries during Covid. Key questions we seek to address in this symposium is: What are the complexities of generating creativity during Covid?, and How has the resultant consumption of the creative industries evolved, if at all?
Unlike a traditional academic conference, the format of the sessions will be dialogical and conversational, as the main objective of this symposium is to cultivate and inspire dialogue, reflection, and action. Presenters and participants will be allocated ample time for questions, debate, and feedback.
Presenters are invited to submit abstracts of between 200 and 300 words addressing these, or indeed any other sub-themes related to the creative industries during Covid:
- Emergent modalities in the appreciation and patronisation of the creative industries;
- New paths for cultural institutions (galleries, museums, theatres, among others);
- Digitisation and the aesthetic experience;
- Rise of on-screen creation and patronage;
- Multi-sensory and mono-sensory aesthetic encounters online;
- Emergent trends in arts and design education during Covid; and
- Emergence of virtual arts festivals.
The closing date for submissions is Wednesday, 30 June 2021.
