About the Department
Page Content
The Department of Visual Communication is home to
Commercial Photography, Integrated Communication Design
and
Motion Picture Production.
The
Diploma in Commercial Photography
establishes a solid knowledge and skills base that supports further growth and advances in contemporary photography, business enterprises, the theory of photography, and visual communication. With state of the art facilities, the programme provides you with opportunities to engage in a variety of industry relevant equipment. In addition to learnt skills, techniques, and business knowledge, the Diploma further prepares you for life after university. Following a holistic approach, the programme emphasises on cross-pollination between theoretical and practical modules to provide students with a holistic outlook on industry.
Design in the South African and global context shifted dramatically in the last 20 years. Communication Design is changing from being viewed solely as aesthetic styling, to being associated directly with the social sciences, the business sciences, and information and communication technologies field.
The
Diploma in Integrated Communication Design
is the only qualification in South Africa that bridges the historical divide between Graphic Design and Multimedia studies, with graphic design directed mainly at traditional design and print disciplines, and multimedia focused on web design, 3D modelling, animation and motion design. As a result, an integrated design approach has become a key differentiator in this diploma, especially at the concept development stage.
The context of this diploma is determined annually by what is industry-relevant to ensure maximum impact and interest. Your modules will be Integrated Communication Design Subject (ICD), Interaction Design (IAD), Motion Design (MDE), Information Design (IFD), African Design (IAD), and Communication Design Practice (CDR). The modules will provide you with the knowledge and skill to solve interesting and complex communication designs across a variety of appropriate media.
As the oldest film programme in South Africa, the film programme of the Tshwane University of Technology provided the South African film and television industry with world-class artists, technicians, and entrepreneurs who are well-founded in practice and applicable theory. For the last 50 years, the purpose of the Diploma in Motion Picture Production is to provide industry-focused training, with a creative academic edge, in all aspects of film production.
