A love of plastic moulds professional career
A childhood project working in his father’s injection moulding workshop to earn pocket money, has moulded the Tshwane University of Technology’s fifth honorary doctorate’s professional career, putting him among the top three global experts in Polymer Technology. Prof Joseph Karger-Kocsis this morning received TUT’s highest accolade, a Doctor Technologiae (honoris causa), during the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment’s (FEBE) Spring Graduation Ceremony at TUT’s Pretoria Campus.

Spring graduations commence at TUT
The annual Tshwane University of Technology Spring Graduation ceremonies, that commence from 10 to 20 October 2017, will see 5 047 successful students receiving their qualifications. This brings the total number of qualifications conferred on successful students in 2017 to more than 15 000.

“Existing research data can be an invaluable source for further studies. Such data is, however currently scattered throughout the country. By preserving this research information in a single resource centre like the South African Data Archive (SADA) hosted by the NRF, unnecessary and costly duplication of research are decreased while the quality of the research findings are enhanced by using data from experienced researchers both locally and internationally.”

Art Exhibition a first for TUT

TUT tackles maths, science problem
In a first for the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (TUTFEBE), Prof SP Daniel Chowdhury, a research professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, together with a team of lecturers have developed a Maths and Science workshop to get mathematics and science teachers at schools in the university’s footprint area “back on track” for training to help their learners perform better. In addition to addressing an important national issue, the project forms part of the Faculty’s annual Community Outreach programmes.

Pageant celebrates plus sized figures
Big can be sexy and beautiful! This was the core message at the first ever Plus Size Beauty Pageant hosted at the Tshwane University of Technology to help boost the self-esteem of larger women and to celebrate plus sized figures. In addition, the contestants who entered, were all dressed in black and wore red lipstick in support of the movement against women trafficking and femicide. This scourge against women has been on the increase country-wide over the past month.

Sibling becomes first benefactor of Benjamin Phehla memorial bursary
Evans Phehla, has just become the first recipient of the memorial bursary fund established in honour of his late brother, Benjamin Phehla. Benjamin died in October last year after being knocked down by a car during the #FeesMustFall protest at the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Soshanguve Campus. An emotional Evans, a first-year Computer Systems Engineering student, said he is grateful for the bursary and promised to work hard to make his family proud.

TUT Bursary and Scholarship Fund reaches the R14 million mark
The Tshwane University of Technology Bursary and Scholarship Fund has achieved another milestone in its quest to grow to R50 million before the end of 2019, following an R11,4 million injection by ABSA over the next three years into the fund. The donation was made at a function hosted at on the Pretoria Campus yesterday, 11 May, and was attended by dignitaries representing the banking giant and the University.

Cuml aude graduate make sit against all odds
When Thapelo Lebese (21) completed his matric he wanted to study Accounting. Due to the unavailability of space he ended up enrolling for Internal Auditing, and fell in love with it instantly. During the Tshwane University of Technology’s Autumn Graduation ceremonies currently underway, he finally obtained the National Diploma in Internal Auditing cum laude, with a whopping 28 distinctions out of 30 modules. He was also awarded the Chancellor’s medal for outstanding academic performance.

TUT Alumnus, genius medical technology scientist
Tshwane University of Technology alumnus, Marthinus Bekker, has once again proved to be the new age “Macgyver” with his latest invention - the Unified Incubation and Detection System (UIDS). This is his second invention in only four years, following the ‘The Rain Catcher’, a device he invented in 2012 that can collect hundreds of litres of drinking water when placed outside in the rain.

Fifty Nyaope addicts to get help after campaign
A campaign against the so-called Bluetooth Nyaope, initiated by TUT FM ‘s AMRUSH breakfast show team, Reikhutsitse Malala, Baphelile Sambo and Sphamandla Nkambule, proved to be huge success. Hosted at Pick ‘n Pay in Soshanguve early in February, 50 addicts from Soshanguve volunteered to get help from rehabilitation centres following the caimpaign.
