Mr Ivan Ishaaq Ka-Mbonane, the new TUT Council Chairperson.
Mr Ivan Ishaaq Ka-Mbonane is an alumnus of the University and a seasoned legal professional with more than 20 years’ experience. His association with the University goes back to his enrolment in 1993 at the Pretoria Technikon and his completion of a National Diploma Public Management (Cum Laude) in 1996. He holds an LLB attained from the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 2002, a Practical Legal Training qualification (Cum Laude) and a Practice Management qualification, both of which he obtained at the Legal Education and Development – Law Society of South Africa. He further acquired a Postgraduate Diploma in Contract Drafting and Interpretation from the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
Mr Ka-Mbonane is currently in private practice. Previously, he held the position of Chief Director: Legal Services at the Department of Public Works. He also worked as a Foreign Exchange Executive at Standard Bank of South Africa, to name a few.
Mr Ka-Mbonane has served in several leadership roles, including the position of President of the SRC, Pretoria Technikon 1994-1995; Pretoria Technikon Advisory Committee from 1994-1995; was member of the Pretoria Technikon Management Committee from 1994-1995; former Board Member: Dennilton Agricultural Co-operative from 2014 to date; former member of the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) (Legal Expert) in 2014; member of the Tender Committee of the Council of Tshwane University of Technology (Independent Legal Expert) from 2015 to 2022; elected as the TUT Council member in 2019; served as Chairperson of the Tender Committee and member of the Finance Committee at TUT (2019-2022); and he is the former Deputy Chairperson of the Thabo Mbeki Leadership Institute Alumni Forum (2006 to 2007).
Mr Ka-Mbonane is also a Legal Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development from July 2019 to date.
Mr Lion Phasha, the incoming Deputy Chairperson of Council.
The incoming Deputy Chairperson of the TUT Council, Mr Lion Phasha is currently the Manager responsible for both the stakeholder relations and the corporate social investment portfolios of the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of SA (Land Bank). His current portfolio covers the development and management of regional and international partnerships. Mr Phasha joined the Land Bank from Wesizwe Platinum Mine’s Bakubung operation, where he led the Sustainability Division.
In prior roles, he developed and delivered regional and international development programmes for South African state agencies - from small NGOs to large international development agencies, delivering development programmes in South Africa and the region.
During this time, he also had an opportunity to manage national and regional grant-funded programmes in Southern Africa, served on policy development forums in South Africa, and delivered partnership projects with various government ministries and corporates. He has a particular passion for youth development and strategic leadership in Africa and served as a full-time Commissioner to the Gauteng Provincial Youth Commission from 2004 to 2006.
Mr Phasha holds a National Diploma in Education, a BA in Industrial Sociology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. He serves as the member of the Council’s Advancement Advisory Committee since 2019.
