Fine Arts students conclude 2022 with ceramics exhibition

30 November 2022

Just before 2022’s hourglass trickles out its last grain of sand, students of the Department of Fine and Studio Arts will head to the St Lorient Art Gallery in Brooklyn, Pretoria, for an exhibition of their ceramic work.

The exhibition, which opens on 3 December, is a showcase of students’ studio practice during 2022. Artworks were selected from those created by students who achieved a high level of excellence during the academic year.

Besides celebrating their achievements, the ultimate aim of the exhibition is to expose students to a professional exhibition environment where their artworks can be viewed and appreciated widely.

The Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Fine and Studio Arts is one of the few university-based visual arts departments in South Africa that offers comprehensive training in ceramics.

From first year through to the postgraduate diploma, the ceramics module is structured to challenge the traditional perception of ceramics as an inherently craft medium.

Lecturers and students push the boundaries of classical ceramics practice by infusing contemporary styles and subjective conceptual narratives into the vessels and sculptural forms they create. The programme also prepares and exposes students to the various career possibilities and opportunities in the creative industries, and critically engages them on issues of sustainability, social engagement, and their positionality.

The opening speaker will be Dr Refiloe Lepere, Lecturer at the Department of Performing Arts.

The St Lorient Art Gallery is situated at 492 Fehrsen Street, Brooklyn Circle. The gallery will be closed for the holiday season from 15 December till 10 January 2023. The exhibition will be on till the end of January 2023.
