This ranking, which is compiled using Scopus citation information, is considered to be a highly prestigious global recognition of scientific research.

Prof Twala, who is the first, and presently only, DVC: Digital Transformation to have been appointed at a South African university, was recognised for his contributions to applied and theoretical machine learning; knowledge discovery and reasoning with uncertainty, as well as image and signal processing.

“I am both humbled and honoured to be recognised and ranked among the world’s preeminent scientists. Thanks to all the students and colleagues I have worked with - and are still working with - they are my backbone. I remain focused on applying my knowledge and research to help create smart campuses for the University and to produce graduates who are ready for the future of work,” says Prof Twala.

Prof Twala is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Institute for the Future of Work, which was established by the Tshwane University of Technology in 2021.
