TUT counted among world’s best in computer sciences and engineering

The Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) is once again recognised as one of the best computer sciences and engineering institutions in the world. This is according to the latest 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject for computer science and engineering.

Prof Lourens van Staden

South Africans who wish to study computer sciences at the University will be pleased to know that TUT is among seven universities in the country that made it onto the list of leading computer science universities in the world. These are TUT, Stellenbosch University (SU), University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Pretoria (UP), University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and Wits University.

The University is also leading the pack among nine South African institutions featured on the list of 1,188 universities offering engineering. TUT is placed at number 398, followed by UJ at 442, North West University at 467, SU at 484, UCT at 638, UKZN at 697, UP at 740, Wits at 797 and the Durban University of Technology at 846.

Prof Lourens van Staden, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, said the University is doing very well in many spheres. “Indeed, we are on the right path. We continue to be proud of our University, staff and students who work tirelessly to elevate the University’s stature in the country, on the continent and in the world. I always emphasise that these achievements belong to all of us. Being counted amongst the best in the world would not be possible without our academics who are recognised as world leaders and pioneers of science, as well as agents of change in their respective fields. This achievement would also not be possible without our support and administrative staff, who work diligently in the background. We have witnessed their steadfast pursuit of new knowledge and innovation, and we are extremely proud of the direction TUT is heading,” said Prof van Staden.

 Dr Dhaya Naidoo

Dr Dhaya Naidoo, Executive Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Technology, and Chief Information Officer (CIO), said, “these rankings are based on a strong belief that the quality of teaching at TUT is predicated on the quality of our research, knowledge production and knowledge transfer. I must mention that these rankings represent a significant step forward on how we assess universities’ performance and more notably, their influence and contribution to a better world for all”.

He added: “Having our University on the list of best universities in the world, is a great milestone worth celebrating. We are living in challenging times due to COVID-19 and the possibility of hybrid and digital teaching staying with us for some time is inevitable. The fact that we continue to be ranked among the best says a mouthful about TUT and the amazing workforce behind these achievements.”
