TUT sport organiser to coach SA netball

3 October 2019

Netball South Africa (NSA) has announced the appointment of Dumisani Chauke, a Sport Organiser at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Directorate of Sport and Recreation, as Assistant Coach for the South African (SA) Spar Proteas, leading up to the 2023 Netball World Cup that will take place in Cape Town.

The two new coaches have their work cut out for them as the world now has their eyes set on South Africa who is the best ranked African team according to International Netball Federation rankings.

Dumisani will assist Dorette Badenhorst, Head Coach for the Proteas. Following in the footsteps of predecessor, Norma Plummer, the pair have an enormous task ahead of them.

Plummer’s departure after the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup in Liverpool, UK, earlier this year left the coaching position open. It was no surprise that NSA appointed Dumisani and Badenhorst.

Dumisani and Badenhorst were part of the Proteas World Cup squad who finished fourth at this year’s global showpiece.

Analysts have indicated that the top four finish was a testament of what has been a great year for the sport in the country and the federation at large. South Africa will host the Africa Netball Cup in October as well as a test series against the Roses from England in November with both events taking place in Cape Town.

A delighted Dumisani took to social media to share her excitement and gratitude. She said she would like to thank each person that took time to send a message, a voice note and make a phone call to congratulate herself and Dot on their appointment as the new coaches of the Spar Proteas netball team.

“Your words of support, encouragement and love are highly appreciated. May you be blessed beyond measure,” Dumisani said.

Cecilia Molokwane, Netball South Africa President, has over time spoken about the importance of growing the sport in the country and ensuring that we make it more professional. For her and her executive committee, getting the right person for the job is vital.
