High five for HELLO Community Arts Festival

30 July 2019

The HELLO Community Arts Festival celebrates its 5th anniversary in August. The Festival was launched in 2014 by the Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Entertainment Technology and aims to harness the power of the arts as a tool to contribute to democracy, human rights and the development of South African communities.

The Festival, with the tagline For and by the people, aims to allow students of the Department to engage with social arts entrepreneurship within enrichment workshops and networking with the community theatre groups to exchange knowledge and skills. Collaborative opportunities have also been found for the Department of Drama and Film (Drama) students specialising in directing, to also engage with offering enrichment workshops for the community prior to the Festival.

“It seeks to put the arts at the centre of the development of communities. The arts are a powerful tool that adds immense value to people’s lives and contributes to their livelihoods. Therefore, the Festival provides a space for talented and passionate individuals to grow and learn how their art can sustain them and the people around them,” says Wandile Mgcodo, Technician at TUT’s Breytenbach Theatre, who project manages the event.

Following the successful ‘take the festival to the people’ drive started last year, this  year the Festival runs from 16 to 17 August (from 10:00 daily) at the Mabopane Indoor Sports Centre. The line-up includes several theatrical productions presented by community theatre groups from the City of Tshwane, Region 6.
