12 July 2019

Tshwane University of Technology Drama alumna, Mathabo Mothibe, finally got her break in television, having worked in the industry since graduating in 2015.

Acting sensation, Mathabo Mothibe.

Mothibe said when she got a callback from Giyani: Land of Blood (GLOB), she knew that the wait was finally over and the career path she has worked hard for was finally falling in place.

“I was so happy that I would finally do what I love most. It is painful to go to auditions and not get a callback. I have been patient and it is finally paying off.”

Mothibe landed one of the lead characters on GLOB that of Khensani Mudau, the daughter of Richard Mudau, played by former Muvhango actor Ndivhuho Mutsila, and Yvonne Chaka Chaka who plays the role of Gladys Mudau, Khensani’s mother.

She said creativity is a precious commodity that could easily fade away if not nurtured. Therefore, she practiced every day to retain her creativity and remember her techniques while waiting for her big break. During this time, she also wrote a short film called “Golden” which was produced by Art Sake Productions.

Mothibe encourages students waiting for their break in the television industry to be patient and to keep doing what they love. She added that quitting should never be an option, even if it feels like the right thing to do.

Mothibe emphasised the importance of mentoring in any industry. “Working with veteran actors has taught me the discipline of the industry and guided me on how I should always handle myself.”
