Wandile Mgcodo, Technician at TUT’s quaint Breytenbach Theatre, has been elected as a council member of the Technical Production Services Association (TPSA).

Breytenbach Theatre stalwart, Wandile Mgcodo, has been elected as a council member of the Technical Production Services Association (TPSA).

The TPSA Council is a sub‐committee of the Southern African Communications Industries Association (SACIA), established in terms of the constitution. It represents industry professionals active in the technical production and live events industry across Southern Africa.

As a council member, Wandile will, among others, assist to develop a long‐term strategic vision for the technical production and live event community as a special interest group within SACIA, and promote membership within the Association.

Wandile says it is an honour to contribute to the development of this industry. “It is a fast-growing industry with a lot of issues affecting freelancers, students, full-time practitioners, company owners, government and regulators,” he says. “I specifically plan to contribute in the fields of formalising the entire technical production sector in South Africa, the formation of a regulatory technical production body (similar to other sectors, such as engineering and medicine), promote ethical practices within the sector (especially with regards to remuneration, recruitment and promotion), and build capacity through education and Recognition of Prior Learning,” he adds.

Wandile has been working at the Breytenbach Theatre for nine years and has lots of hopes and dreams for this TUT asset. “The theatre has produced several successful artists, technicians, designers, directors, etc. My hopes for the theatre are that it continues to be one of the best creative hubs in South Africa and that it attracts more audiences, not only in the City of Tshwane, but also nationally and internationally.

The theatre is part of the Faculty of the Arts’ Department of Entertainment Technology (ET).
