Lecturers selected judges for the National Tourism Lilizela Awards

8 August 2019

Tourism lecturers, Samantha Bouwer and Portia Pearl Siyanda Sifolo, were recently selected as judges for the National Tourism Lilizela Awards, an initiative by the National Department of Tourism, in partnership with South African Tourism.

On their way to making TUT recognised in the tourism space are lecturers Portia Sifolo and Samantha Bouwer.

First launched in 2013, the awards aim to recognise and reward the highest levels of excellence in the tourism value chain. The awards name is derived from the Zulu word ‘’Lilizela’’, which means celebrating and praising by ululating when someone has done well.

Adjudication and deliberations took place in Sandton from 8 to 12 July 2019. Samantha says: “It was an honour for us to be selected from the Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces, respectively. Not only was it an interesting and informative experience, but also extremely valuable in terms of helping us to ensure industry currency within the tourism curricula.”

Portia says that with the support of the TUT’s Department of Tourism, partaking in this initiative provides an opportunity for the department to build enduring relationships with external constituencies.

Both judges will be attending the provincial award ceremonies which will take place during Tourism Month in September, with the National Awards taking place in October.
