TUT welcomes Min Nzimande’s appointment

The Tshwane University of Technology Council, student leadership and community, welcomes the appointment of Dr Blade Nzimande as Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Government, yesterday, 29 May.

Prof Lourens van Staden, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, congratulated the National Executive and Deputy Ministers on their appointments. “The Hon Minister Nzimande is no stranger to this portfolio. During his previous term as Minister of Higher Education and Training, between 2009 and 2017, his strategic vision and bold decision-making changed the face of higher education in the country. One of the highlights was the implementation of fee free education for financially needy but academically deserving students in 2016,” Prof van Staden says.  

He adds: “Min Nzimande’s smart, visionary leadership is well known and we are looking forward to once again working with him in this portfolio.”

Prof van Staden also congratulated Mr Buti Kgwaridi Manamela who is the Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology. His previous portfolio was Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training. Deputy Minister Manamela has been a Member of Parliament since 2009. 

“Deputy Minister Manamela’s previous experience in Higher Education and Training as well involvement in Youth Development will stand him in good stead in this portfolio,” says Prof van Staden.

“We would like to wish the Minister and Deputy Minister success and all of the best during their respective terms at the helm of our sector,” Prof van Staden concludes.
