Four from TUT nominated for prestigious Women in Science Awards

Four top-performing women from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) are among the nominees for the 2018 South African Women in Science Awards (WISA). 

Prof Shirley Motaung, Assistant Dean: Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation will compete in the Distinguished Women in Science category for Research and Innovation (R&I) leading to a demonstrable contribution in enhancing inclusive growth and development.

The other nominees are Mapula Razwinani and Tiisetso Mpai, two PhD students in Biomedical Technology and Crop Sciences respectively, as well as Kgothatso Tlhapi, a Master’s student in Food Technology.

Razwinani and Mpai were nominated in the Postgraduate Fellowship category - PhD, while Tlhapi is a finalist in the DST Master’s Fellowship Awards category.

The theme for the 2018 WISA is “Leveraging Science, Technology and Innovation to Enhance Inclusive Growth and Development”.  

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) annually calls for nominations for the South African WISA. These awards recognise and reward excellence by women scientists and researchers and profile them as role models.

The four will join a select group of South African women in the 2018 search for excellence at the awards on 16 August 2018. The event will form part of DST’s Women's Month celebrations.

Mapula Razwinani was nominated in the Postgraduate Fellowship category-PHD.
Tiisetso Mpai is a contestant in the Postgraduate Fellowship category-PHD. 
Kgothatso Tlhapi is a finalist in the DST Master’s Fellowship Awards category.
