TUT graduate uses skills to create self-employment
23 March 2013
Motivated by the high unemployment rate in the country, Tshwane University of Technology graduate, Caroline Mokoena (25), uses her internationally acquired skills to create self-employment. Being passionate about sharing knowledge and creating work opportunities, she started her own tutoring company called AutoRev Substratum. She gladly shares the new and easy techniques she mastered with civil and other engineering students when teaching AutoCAD and Revit.
The highly motivated student enrolled for a B Tech Civil Engineering: Construction Management at TUT was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to do her practicals in Italy. Understanding the importance of being self-sufficient, she started to use the skills she acquired there to help engineering students improve their drawing skills and generate a small income for herself.
“This experience was a revelation to me, especially after struggling to find a relevant internship, which resulted in a backlog in my academic progress. Although I was due to graduate in 2015, this caused me to stay at home for six months. The situation, however, seemed to work in my favour. When I returned to TUT to complete my studies, I volunteered to assist Prof Williams Kupolati from TUT’s Department of Civil Engineering and Prof Antonio Frattari from the University of Trento, Italy on a project in Mamelodi. This changed everything!” she said.
Mokoena said this was a life changing experience, “It taught me valuable life lessons: to appreciate what I have in life; the importance of education; working hard in order to achieve set goals and never giving up.”
*TUT has an agreement with the University of Trento on a number of research and community projects.
