TUT lecturer helps choose this generation’s best art(ists)

21 August 2018

Pfunzo Sidogi, lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Department of Fine and Applied Arts, is part of the esteemed judging panel of this year’s Sasol New Signatures Art Competition. As the longest running competition of its kind in South Africa, it has for many years provided a platform for unknown artists to break into the mainstream art fraternity.

Pfunzo Sidogi, lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Department of Fine and Applied Arts, is a  member of the final judging panel of the prestigious Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.

“To be one of the judges of such a prestigious competition is truly an honour and a significant responsibility. As judges, we are provided with front row access to the most avant-garde art in the country, but at the same time, we have the burden of evaluating and predicting the type of art that should be seen as the best of this generation,” says Sidogi.

Sidogi is also the co-founder of a non-profit organisation called Ithuteng Art (www.ithutengart.org.za), which aims to improve the standard of art education at selected schools in the City of Tshwane.

The theme of this year’s Sasol New Signatures is Limitless and a total of 94 works made the cut for the final round of judging. Sidogi and his fellow judges now have the difficult, yet exciting task to choose the winner, runner-up and five merit award winners that will be announced on Wednesday, 29 August at an award ceremony hosted at the Pretoria Art Museum.

The overall winner will pocket R100 000 and get an opportunity to host his/her first solo exhibition as part of the 2019 competition. The competition is held in proud partnership with the Association of Arts Pretoria.

The Sasol New Signatures Exhibition is open to the public from 30 August to 7 October at the Pretoria Art Museum.
