Pulitzer prize-winning play staged at the Rostrum

The Department of Drama and Film (Drama) will stage American playwright Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Ruined at the Rostrum Theatre in May.
The play is set in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a no-holds barred depiction of the violence and harrowing experiences of war, especially in terms of brutal rape and the consequences thereof on women who are caught in the cross-fire of a war fought by men.

Inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and her Children, Mama Nadi, one of the characters, tries to survive during a time of war by running a business. She keeps a bar and brothel in a small mining village, trying to satisfy the needs of both government and rebel soldiers in order to save herself and her girls from further ordeals.

The production is designed and directed by Bett Hoon-Pacey, Associate Professor at the Department of Drama and Film, in collaboration with the Department of Entertainment Technology in the areas of set production, lighting design, sound and make-up.

Ruined will be staged from 9 to 11 May daily at 19:00, with a matinee performance at 15:00 on 12 May.

Tickets are R40 per person and R20 per student with a student card. Bookings at the Drama Programme, tel. 012 382 6130 or email SteynfCM@tut.ac.za.

The TUT Arts Campus is situated at 24 Du Toit Street (corner Du Toit & Struben streets).

Please note that due to the harrowing content, violence and strong language, there is an age restriction of 16.
