TUT and Haaga-Helia honour mentors for hard work and dedication

5 September 2023

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Science recently honoured and celebrated mentors who contributed to the success of a mutually beneficial mentorship programme hosted at both universities.

TUT and Haaga-Helia mentors who were honoured for their hard work and dedication.

In 2020, amidst the challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, TUT and the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences initiated an innovative mentorship programme that transcended physical boundaries. This partnership developed from the need to adapt to the new normal when traditional face-to-face staff development programmes were no longer feasible due to travel restrictions and safety concerns.

“This agreement laid the foundation for a Capacity Development Programme aimed at enhancing the educational experience and skills of both institutions. Over the years, this partnership has evolved, culminating in a remarkable achievement in 2023,” said Prof Ben van Wyk, DVC for Teaching and Learning.

Since the inception of the mentorship program, the partnership has seen a significant growth in its impact, Prof van Wyk added.

“To date, a total of 380 graduates have successfully completed the mentorship program. This growth is not only a testament to the dedication of mentors, but moreover the commitment of both institutions in fostering academic and professional development,” said Prof van Wyk.

In addition to the core collaboration between TUT and Haaga-Helia, the programme’s horizons have expanded through partnerships with the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). These local collaborators have played a crucial role in broadening the reach and impact of the mentorship programme. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has also recognised the significance of this initiative by providing funding support through the University Capacity Development Program (UCDP).
