Become one of the Men Building a Nation was the powerful message to about 400 male students from the Tshwane University of Technology attending the annual Motlhabane Men Empowerment Seminar. Hosted by the Directorate of Student Governance and Leadership Development (SGLD), this is a seminar for men to learn lessons, share knowledge, ideas and experiences to enrich each other’s lives.

Among the 14 speakers, were South African Football legend, Doctor “16 Valve” Khumalo and Dr David Molapo, educator, leadership consultant, author and renowned international inspirational speaker. The seminar included a panel discussion, as well as breakaway workshop sessions during which students had an opportunity to interact with peers and professionals.

Doctor “16 Valve” Khumalo highlighted the importance of keeping friends who are aligned with what you want to achieve in life. He added that being focused is important for young men, since factors like women and substance abuse can become distractions. In closing he said: “Work in silence and let your achievements be your voice.”

Dr David Molapo, who has a long-standing relationship with the conference, is the Founder of the I Can Leadership Institute Africa, CEO of I CAN 4IR, Dean of Logos University USA Southern African Campus. He spoke about being a great leader and making the right choices. According to him, it is essential for young men who want to help build a nation to have a coach, mentor and a therapist. “These people will lead you towards taking the right decisions in becoming the man you wish to be. Leadership is identifying tomorrow’s problems and solving them today,” he added.

Direi Masenya, a third-year Public Affairs student who attended the event, said the seminar exceeded his expectations. He added that the experience was a bit overwhelming to him, since it allowed men to be vulnerable and listened to, which is something society has not yet normalised. “I really wish the seminar could take place at least three times a year, as it gives one hope for the future and an opportunity to support one another.”
