Prof Hlengani Mathebula, newly appointed Shoprite board member.
Prof Mathebula, who has more than 35 years’ industry experience, 28 of which were spent in the financial services industry, has served as a strategist at the South African Reserve Bank and the South African Revenue Service.
Prior to that, he was the managing executive of Absa Private Bank and CEO of FNB’s personal banking unit. He also spent time as the president of the Black Business Executive Circle.

Currently, Prof Mathebula is the executive director of Ignite Africa Advisory Services Group, chairman of the Media Development and Diversity Agency, and a board member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
He also has farming and tourism interests through the Mathebula Agriculture and Tourism entity, where he is the founding chairman.
The Minister of Finance has previously delegated him to act as the Commissioner, having served as a member of the Executive Committee of the South African Revenue Services (SARS) responsible for Governance, International Relations, Strategy, Security and Communications.
Owing to his wide-ranging experience, he presently serves as Managing Partner and Senior Advisor at Cornerstone Capital Partners, a boutique strategic and investment advising firm. In November 2020, the Health Minister also appointed him to the board of the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as the Community Representative.
